Become an Appointment Setter: The Ultimate Guide to Starting Your Career in High-Ticket Sales

Dec 25, 2023

If you are looking to kick-start your career in high ticket sales, becoming an appointment setter is one of the best ways to do so. This role allows you to get into companies where you can move up the ranks and progress your career into sales, work closely with a sales team to build experience and you can earn a great income.

But getting into appointment setting can be a confusing journey as there are so many different companies out there offering a million different things and if you've never even set an appointment before you probably don't know where to start.

So what does it actually take to become an appointment setter and how can you do it?

What Is An Appointment Setter?

An appointment setter is someone whose sole job is, as the name suggests, to set appointments. In most cases, we talk about appointment setting in the context of high-ticket b2b sales but it can be booking calls for literally anything from cooking courses to software to $5k per month services.

Typically, you will be sending messages on a social media platform such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn etc to ideal prospects who may be looking for your offer to eventually book them onto a sales call where they will be turned into a done deal.

Most people who come into appointment setting have aspirations of becoming a closer in the future meaning they will be taking the calls booked by the appointment setting team to turn them into closed deals. Becoming an appointment setter is the perfect first step to starting your career in sales.

How Much Can You Earn As An Appointment Setter?

Whenever we talk to anyone who wants to get into appointment setting, one of the most pressing questions they have is how much an appointment setter can actually make. While the exact amount varies depending on loads of different factors, there is a general pay structure that most companies will follow.

  • Base Pay - Not all but a lot of appointment-setting jobs will offer a low base pay that could be anywhere from $200-500 per month. This normally has conditions such as booking a certain number of calls per month to earn that base pay.

  • Pay Per Call - Some businesses may offer a payment per call you book for them. This could be anything from $10-50 per call booked depending on how difficult it is to book calls for within their ICP. In some cases, you may get a base pay along with payment per call booked.

  • Commission Pay - Some companies may offer you a percentage of the final deal size. For example, if they closed a deal from a meeting you book for $10k and you get a 5% commission, you would get $500. The exact percentage you earn will depend on the company but on average you can expect anything from 3-10%. Again, this can be offered either on its own or alongside one of the other payment structures.

So how much can you realistically expect to make as an appointment setter? The exact amount depends on how much work you put in, the offer you set for, how difficult the market is etc but on average you can expect to make anywhere from $2-8k per month. We've had appointment setters making upwards of $6k per month just from commissions.

What Do You Actually Do As An Appointment Setter?

As an appointment setter, you will be carrying out the same tasks every day in order to book calls for the offer you are working on. Typically your day will consist of three main things:

  • Prospecting - The first thing you'll need to do each day is find qualified prospects that fit the ideal client profile so you can reach out to them. This part takes the longest to do but is one of the most important, you can send the best outreach messages in the world but if the wrong person is receiving them you simply won't book any calls.

  • Outreach - The next step is to outreach to each of the prospects you just sourced. There are so many different strategies and methods you can use to do this but ultimately this will be down to the offer you are setting for and the company you are working with.

  • Follow-ups - Chances are a lot of the prospects you reach out to won't respond to your message straight away. So a large part of your job is to continue reaching out to prospects you want to get on a call until they eventually book.

The great thing about appointment setting is you are in control of how many calls you book, the more messages you send the more calls you'll book. Meaning that the more times you repeat the process above, the more money you will make.

How Do You Learn Appointment Setting?

While appointment setting is a relatively easy skill to pick up, there are countless different strategies out there making it difficult to know where to start. The best way to learn is through simply doing the job and learning as you go.

There are 3 different paths you can go down to learn appointment setting:

Join A Company With A Training Program

A lot of companies offer entry-level roles to people who have never set an appointment in their life but want to master the skill. They will provide all the training you need to see success and you will do the tasks while learning meaning you will be making money from day one.

The downside with this option is in most cases you'll have to pay a hefty fee just to get access to the training and support which can cost anywhere from $100-$1000+. Not exactly the easiest thing to swallow if you are just getting started out.

However, the good thing about this path is you will be able to learn the skill of appointment setting very quickly and always have people around you to guide you in the right direction. You also will earn as you learn meaning you can make a quick return on investment if the training program is any good.

Learn For Free Through YouTube

If paying for a course isn't your thing then this is your next option. YouTube is free education, you can learn pretty much any skill you want to without paying a penny for it. Just by searching "How to set appointments on LinkedIn" on YouTube, and you will be presented with a tonne of different videos that will teach you the art of booking calls/

Going this route will take the longest but it will teach you all the theory and will look good on your application when you say you've watched 50+ hours of content around appointment setting. It's important you don't just watch the videos without taking any notes because otherwise, the information will go in one ear and straight out the other.

The biggest downside to this is that you aren't able to practice the skill of appointment setting while you learn it making it difficult to know if you are on the right path and identify your weaknesses so you can improve. This option should only be used if you don't have the money to pay for training or can't find a role.

How To Find Appointment Setting Roles To Apply For

Unless you are already either part of a program that places you in a business once you've completed the training or you are working with Acquisition Systems, you will need to find roles to apply for. There are a million different roles out there but the challenge is finding quality opportunities that won't waste your time.

Platform To Find Roles

Again, there are tonnes of roles you can apply for across the internet but here are some of the best platforms we have found to get appointment-setting roles:

  • Private Facebook Groups - Find Facebook groups dedicated to getting appointment setting/closing roles. Ideally, you want to find roles in private Facebook groups as these posts tend to be vetted meaning they will be more high quality and offer a better opportunity.

  • Twitter - Follow people in the space you want to get a role in, if you want to focus on appointment setting for marketing agencies follow a tonne of marketing agency owners (follow @ewanmcbride06 to be the first to know when new opportunities at Acquisition Systems open). Twitter is often the first place companies advertise new roles as it's quick and easy to do but make sure to get in early as a lot of people will be applying for the same role.

  • UpWork - While UpWork takes a bit more patience to find a role, the quality of opportunities tends to be higher as you need to pay to use the platform and businesses posting jobs go through various verification steps. You will probably need something around $100 to get a role through UpWork and there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube going over how to get jobs through UpWork.

  • Acquisition Systems Careers Page - As mentioned above, we are constantly looking to hire new appointment setters and we also occasionally place setters in our client's companies so be sure to keep an eye on our careers page for roles are are currently hiring for.

What To Look For In An Appointment Setting Role

Sometimes it can be difficult to know what to actually look for in an appointment-setting role, how do you know if it's legitimate or not, how do you know if you'll actually get paid for it etc. Here are the key things you should be looking out for:

  • Can you find the company online? - They should be easy to find on Google and have some kind of social presence through platforms like LinkedIn. If you can't find them, chances are they are a very small company that hasn't got a proven offer meaning it will be difficult to book calls for

  • What is their payment offer? - If they are advertising a guaranteed base pay of $5k per month chances are it isn't legitimate. You should be looking out for roles offering either a small base pay + commission or a commission-only job as they usually have the best product market fit and will be able to pay you every time.

  • Have other people applied to it? - If no one has applied to the role after a few days then chances are potential applicants are avoiding it for one reason or another so you should also try to avoid it as there is probably something wrong with it.

  • Do they offer what you are looking for? - Before looking for a role, make sure you know what it is you want to get out of it. What kind of payment are you looking for? What KPIs do you think you can hit? Do you need training provided? Do you want to be part of a team? You get the idea.

Conclusion

This comprehensive guide has pretty much everything you need to know about how to become an appointment setter from start to finish. Appointment setting is a great role to get into if you are a complete beginner with no experience but want to move into the sales world.
